MANLIUS, N.Y., Spring break is five days out, and if you’re a parent in the Fayetteville-Manlius district, you’ve probably already got the beach bags half-packed and the kids counting down. F-M’s spring recess runs March 30 through April 3, and many CNY families will be heading to Syracuse Hancock International Airport on Friday to kick off the week.
But this year? Getting out of town requires a little more planning than usual. Between a federal government shutdown squeezing TSA staffing nationwide, active construction at the airport, and what’s shaping up to be a record-breaking travel season, here’s what you need to know before you load up the minivan and head down 481.
The TSA Situation: Syracuse Is Holding, But Barely
The Department of Homeland Security has been in a partial shutdown since February 14, and it’s hitting airports hard. More than 300 TSA officers have quit nationwide since the shutdown began, and roughly 50,000 remaining agents have been working without pay, according to NPR and CNN. Last week, they missed their first full paychecks.

At major hubs, it’s ugly. Wait times hit two hours at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental and 80 minutes at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson, CNN reports. In Philadelphia, three security checkpoints closed entirely due to short staffing. More than half of Houston’s TSA staff called out sick.
The good news for CNY families: Syracuse Hancock is holding up. The airport released a statement saying operations remain regular thanks to the dedication of local TSA officers, and current average wait times at SYR are running around 8 minutes, according to TSA wait time trackers. But, and this is important, TSA Acting Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl warned that smaller airports could be forced to shut down entirely if call-out rates keep climbing, Time reports.
The bottom line: Syracuse is fine today. That could change by Friday. Plan accordingly.
Construction at Hancock: Know Before You Go
Here’s the other curveball. Syracuse Hancock kicked off construction on a new $60 million Consolidated Rental Car Facility on March 16, and it’s already reshaping how you pick up and drop off passengers, according to the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority.
What’s changed:
- The Arrivals B Loop is closed, completely, for approximately 14 months
- The Overflow Parking Lot is closed
- All passenger pickups now happen at the Arrivals A south loop only, and it’s active loading only. No standing, no parking, no circling
- If your flight hasn’t landed yet, use the free Cell Phone Lot on Eileen Collins Boulevard (just past Mohawk Global) to wait
If you’ve got someone picking you up on Friday afternoon, make sure they know about these changes. The old “I’ll just loop around arrivals” routine won’t work anymore. The airport is actively enforcing the no-standing rule at Arrivals A, Spectrum News CNY reports.
The Numbers: Why This Spring Break Could Be Rough Nationally
Airlines for America projects roughly 171 million passengers will fly between March and April, a record. That’s about 2.8 million people per day squeezing through security checkpoints, many of them staffed by agents who haven’t been paid in over a month, according to CBS News.
NPR reports that TSA wait times are “unpredictable” right now, varying wildly from one checkpoint to the next, even within the same airport. Early morning flights are getting hit especially hard as call-outs spike before dawn.
What We’d Recommend for CNY Families Flying Friday
Based on what we’re seeing from local and national reporting, here’s a practical checklist for anyone flying out of Hancock this spring break:
- Arrive 2.5 to 3 hours early. Syracuse normally doesn’t need that kind of buffer, but this isn’t a normal week. The airport itself recommends 2.5 hours for domestic flights during peak travel periods, add time given the TSA uncertainty
- Check in online 24 hours ahead and download your mobile boarding pass. Skip the counter entirely if you can
- TSA PreCheck matters more than ever. PreCheck lines at SYR average about 4 minutes vs. 8+ in the regular lane. If you don’t have it, consider signing up at the enrollment center inside Hancock, it’s $78 for five years
- Pack smart. 3-1-1 liquids rule, laptops out, shoes off (unless PreCheck). The faster each person gets through, the less strain on TSA staff who are already stretched thin
- Parking fills up during spring break. Pre-book if you can, but don’t panic, the airport says more spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis even when pre-bookings sell out
- Tell your ride about the construction. No Arrivals B loop, no overflow lot. Cell Phone Lot on Eileen Collins Blvd is free. Arrivals A only, active loading, keep it moving
- Build a backup plan. With TSA staffing volatile nationally, consider flexible fare tickets or travel insurance. A missed connection in Atlanta or Charlotte could turn into an overnight situation
- Monitor @SYRAirport and syrairport.org the morning of your flight for any last-minute TSA or construction updates
The Bright Spot
Despite all of this, Syracuse Hancock is actually in better shape than most airports right now. It’s a smaller operation, 29 nonstop destinations, manageable volume, and the local TSA team has been showing up. The airport also just wrapped an 18-month terminal expansion with three new gates, more seating, and charging stations, LocalSYR reports. So once you’re through security, the experience on the other side is actually nicer than it’s ever been.
Central New York families have been doing the spring break airport scramble for years. This one just needs a little extra prep. Get there early, pack your patience, and maybe buy the TSA agent at your checkpoint a coffee on the other side. They’ve earned it.
