Syracuse Hosts Nanotechnology Symposium, Showcasing Local Innovation

Syracuse University hosted the 2026 New York State Nanotechnology Network (NNN) Symposium at Goldstein Auditorium. The event brought together students, researchers, industry leaders, and government officials to spotlight Central New York’s semiconductor and quantum technology ecosystem.

Themed “New York State Talent and Technology—Shaping the Future,” the symposium featured keynote addresses from Michael Hogan, chief business officer of GlobalFoundries, and Merideth Andreucci, senior vice president of Empire State Development’s GO-SEMI initiative. This gathering showcased cutting-edge research and connected students with potential employers, emphasizing the role of local educational institutions in workforce development.

Central to the event was the University’s $20 million investment in the semiconductor sector, including the Center for Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (CASM). Developed with Onondaga County, this initiative aims to train the next generation of semiconductor technicians and engineers. Nearly 500 veterans have enrolled in workforce training programs through the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families, reflecting a strong commitment to community support.

“The investments Syracuse has made in facilities and faculty have positioned us to be a major partner to industry,” said Duncan Brown, University Vice President for Research. Don Crampton, innovation concierge for the NY SMART I-Corridor, added that events like the NNN Symposium are vital for fostering collaboration between academia and industry.

Meanwhile, Syracuse is gearing up for the reopening of farmers markets this spring. These markets provide fresh produce and support local businesses, boosting the community’s economy. Their return brings new life to neighborhoods across the city.

As warmer months approach, residents can look forward to various events celebrating local culture and innovation. The Onondaga Creekwalk will also open, offering a scenic route for walkers and cyclists to enjoy Syracuse’s beauty.

With educational advancements and community initiatives, Central New York continues to thrive as a hub of innovation. The recent symposium at Syracuse University exemplifies the region’s commitment to technology and workforce development.
