New York State Fair construction season underway in Geddes as 2026 fair approaches

Capital projects at the 375-acre Geddes fairgrounds run through the spring and early summer in preparation for the 13-day fair.

The Great New York State Fair, the second-oldest state fair in the United States, returns to its Geddes fairgrounds in late August 2026 for its annual 13-day run. The fair, owned and operated by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, has occupied the same 375-acre site at the southwestern end of Onondaga Lake since 1890. The spring and early summer months are the construction-and-prep season for fair infrastructure, vendor space, and the agricultural exhibit halls.

The 2026 fair runs from late August through Labor Day Monday. Attendance has historically exceeded 800,000 visitors over the 13-day run, with peak single-day attendance regularly above 100,000.

What is on the fairgrounds capital project list

The state has invested more than $120 million in fairgrounds capital improvements since 2014, when the state Legislature approved a multi-year reinvestment plan. The visible results include the Expo Center on the western half of the grounds, which opened in 2018 as a year-round event venue, and the rebuilt main entrance plaza. The current spring construction season focuses on the agricultural exhibit halls, the dairy cattle pavilion, and the midway infrastructure.

How the fair fits in the regional economy

The Onondaga County Department of Economic Development has previously published economic impact estimates for the fair, which range from $90 million to $110 million in direct and indirect spending per year. The figure includes hotel occupancy lifts in the Syracuse market, restaurant revenue increases in the surrounding suburbs, and direct vendor sales on the fairgrounds.

      Centro free fair transportation

Centro, the Syracuse-area public transit operator, runs free park-and-ride shuttle service to the fairgrounds throughout the fair from multiple suburban locations including the New York State Fairgrounds Park-and-Ride, the OnCenter, and the Carousel Center / Destiny USA lot.

      What to watch

The fair’s full 2026 schedule of grandstand entertainment, agricultural competitions, and food vendor lineup is published through the state Department of Agriculture and Markets official fair site.
