Syracuse City Schools Celebrate Student Achievements and New Programs

The Syracuse City School District (SCSD) is celebrating student achievements and launching new educational programs for families in Central New York.

At the recent SCSD Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Jaime Alicea announced that over 200 students participated in the annual Science and Engineering Fair at the JMA Wireless Dome. Nottingham High School students earned top honors for their sustainable energy projects, showcasing the district’s commitment to STEM education.

“These achievements reflect the hard work of our students and educators, setting a strong foundation for future learning,” Alicea said.

The SCSD is also launching a new after-school program to enhance literacy skills among elementary students. Starting next month, the program will be available at Clary Middle School and Dr. Weeks Elementary School, aiming to improve reading proficiency rates.

“Literacy is a critical skill for our students’ success,” said SCSD Literacy Coordinator Maria Torres. “This program will provide support and resources to help our young learners thrive.”

Parents in Eastwood and North Side can expect more information about the program soon, as the district seeks to engage families in their children’s education.

Additionally, the SCSD is partnering with local organizations to provide mental health resources for students. This initiative addresses the growing need for support, especially following pandemic challenges. Workshops and counseling will be available at Henninger High School and Corcoran High School.

“Mental health is just as important as academic achievement,” Alicea said. “We want to ensure our students have the support they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.”

As the Syracuse Farmers Markets reopen this weekend, families can look forward to community events promoting local engagement and wellness. The markets will feature fresh produce and educational workshops, aligning with the district’s initiatives for healthy lifestyles.

These developments in the SCSD reflect a trend toward holistic education, where academic success is complemented by social and emotional well-being. Local families can expect a more supportive and enriching educational environment.
