Syracuse University Introduces AI Tool for Class Registration

Syracuse University (SU) launched an AI tool named Clementine on March 26, 2026, to assist students with class registration for the fall semester. This tool streamlines course selection by matching class offerings with students’ schedules, according to a campus email from SU’s Information Technologies Services.

Chief Digital Officer Jeff Rubin said Clementine will help students navigate the university’s course catalog. “We just choose to bring that all together into a place where you don’t have to do all of that work yourself,” Rubin said.

As students gear up for class selection starting April 8, Clementine aims to enhance their experience with tailored course recommendations. Rubin stressed that while Clementine is helpful, it won’t replace traditional advising. “This doesn’t replace Degree Works. This doesn’t replace conversation with your advisor,” he noted.

The launch of Clementine coincides with SU’s efforts to improve student services through technology. This trend mirrors broader initiatives in Central New York, where schools are increasingly using digital tools to enhance learning.

Impact on Students and Future Developments

Students have begun using Clementine, though some report it can be slow, taking up to a minute for responses. Rubin acknowledged this but reassured students that the depth of information justifies the wait. “Even if it’s a little slow, the richness of the answer is worth the wait,” he said.

Looking ahead, Rubin indicated future versions of Clementine may offer advice on degree requirements and career paths, further boosting its utility.

      Contextualizing the Launch

The launch of Clementine reflects a trend in Central New York’s education sector, where institutions are adopting technology to meet student needs. This follows recent developments in the Syracuse City School District, which has introduced new programs to improve student outcomes, as reported by CNY Signal.

As the academic landscape evolves, tools like Clementine are set to help students navigate their educational journeys more effectively. The integration of AI into advising reflects changing educational dynamics and SU’s commitment to enhancing student support.

      Conclusion

The introduction of Clementine at Syracuse University marks a significant step in using technology to assist students in their academic pursuits. As registration approaches, this tool is poised to make the process more efficient.
