What’s happening in Central New York today
More than 40 potters and ceramic artists from across New York and the Northeast gathered at the ninth annual Clayscapes Pottery Market on Buckley Road this weekend, according to the Daily Orange. The event, hosted at a greenhouse in Chuck Hafner’s Farmers Market and Garden Center, featured a many functional and sculptural ceramics, from mugs and bowls to gothic-inspired skull sculptures. Clayscapes Pottery, founded in 2003 by Don Seymour, has become a center for the ceramics community in Syracuse, offering classes, workshops, and a gallery space.

Emily Seymour, chief financial officer of Clayscapes Pottery, told the Daily Orange that the market has grown busier each year, drawing return customers and fostering a strong local ceramics community. Vendors like Nina Spano, a retired art teacher and Syracuse University alum, showcased work inspired by family traditions and local gardening. Other artists, such as Marcus Acevedo of Fire and Brimstone Pottery, displayed gothic-themed functional ware, emphasizing the diversity of styles present at the market.
Meanwhile, the Oncenter Convention Center in downtown Syracuse saw 10,000 attendees at the 13th annual RetroGameCon, a three-day event that brought together gamers and cosplayers from around the world, according to the Daily Orange. The convention is one of the largest of its kind in Central New York and continues to draw crowds to the city’s urban core.
SU campus safety report shows increases in offenses
Syracuse University’s 2025 Department of Public Safety campus safety report, released October 1, details a rise in several reported offenses on and near campus, according to the Daily Orange. The report, required by the federal Jeanne Clery Act, showed 10 rapes reported in campus residential facilities in 2025, up from six in 2024. There were also eight reports of fondling on campus and one in a non-campus building, compared to three in 2023 and seven in 2024.
Stalking incidents doubled to 42 in 2025, and 11 reports of dating violence were recorded, one fewer than the previous year. The 2025 report is the first to include hazing incidents, with 24 reported, 21 of which occurred in non-campus buildings. The Daily Orange notes that all reported sex offenses on SU’s campus are referred to the Syracuse Police Department’s Abused Persons Unit for investigation.

Events and community updates across CNY
Fall events are in full swing across Central New York. Tim’s Pumpkin Patch in Marietta is open every day in October from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Pumpkin Fest Weekend activities including hay rides, a corn maze, and seasonal treats. Admission ranges from $9.30 to $10.34, according to the Daily Orange.
The 53rd annual LaFayette Apple Festival takes place this weekend at 2444 Tully Farms Road, LaFayette, featuring over 400 vendors and apple-themed treats. Hours are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with admission set at $8.
The Oncenter Carrier Theater will host the Syracuse Ballet’s performance of “Dracula” on Saturday, with shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets range from $41.70 to $65.40. For music fans, the Song & Dance venue will feature a performance by AJJ on Saturday at 8 p.m., with tickets priced at $34.17.

The Central New York Regional Market continues its weekly farmers market on Saturdays and flea market on Sundays at 2100 Park St., Syracuse. The flea market runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features antiques, handmade items, and specialty foods. Entry is free.

Cayuga County news: 911 leadership change and substance use prevention
In Cayuga County, a longtime 911 dispatcher retired after more than 25 years of service, according to The Citizen (Auburn). Ben Guzalak, who has served with the agency for 22 years, was appointed as the new 911 administrator. The county also announced that the DMV will open a new office early next year.
Confidential Help for Alcohol & Drugs, located at 75 Genesee St., Suite 4 in Auburn, continues its work with local families and schools to prevent substance use. The organization has served the community for over 50 years, according to The Citizen (Auburn).
