How the college fits in Clinton and Oneida County
Hamilton sits in the Village of Clinton, a community of approximately 1,900 residents on the Chenango Canal corridor in Oneida County. The college is the largest employer in the village and one of the largest in Oneida County outside the City of Utica. The college’s spending on facilities, dining, and student services represents a substantial fraction of the village’s annual economic activity.
Oneida County’s tourism office has identified Hamilton’s summer programming and reunion weekends as one of the strongest weekend lodging drivers in the broader Utica-Rome region.
The longer institutional history
Hamilton College was founded as Hamilton-Oneida Academy in 1793 by Reverend Samuel Kirkland, the Presbyterian missionary who worked with the Oneida Nation. The academy received its college charter in 1812 and took its current name from Alexander Hamilton, who served as a founding trustee. The college merged with Kirkland College, a sister liberal arts college for women, in 1978 and has operated as a coeducational institution since then.
