Dairy expansion brings new business and technology to Syracuse

The American Dairy XPO in Syracuse was more than just a trade show. It was a sign of how Central New York’s agricultural sector is adapting and growing. Brad Ainsley, a sales representative with Seneca Dairy Systems, told Spectrum News CNY that his company has doubled its growth, crediting the expansion of New York’s dairy industry and the availability of grants and tax incentives.

Seneca Dairy Systems, which manufactures gates, cooling fans, and other barn equipment, has seen increased demand as farms look to upgrade older facilities. “It’s not just farms that are looking to build new barns; there’s also some tax incentives too and grants that have helped out with the process of upgrading equipment, which is key, older facilities that may need to get new stalls, ventilation, cow cooling and things like that,” Ainsley said to Spectrum News CNY.

State support has come through the Dairy Modernization Program, which allows farmers to apply for funding to improve infrastructure. The program is part of a broader push to keep New York competitive as a dairy producer, especially as new processing plants open or expand in Central New York.

New processing plants and local business growth

In the last five years, New York has seen the addition or expansion of several major dairy processing facilities, including the Fairlife plant in Monroe County, plans for a Chobani plant in Oneida County, and expansions at Great Lakes Cheese and Cayuga Milk Ingredients, Spectrum News CNY reports. These facilities often require producers to meet higher standards for animal welfare and milk quality, driving further investment in farm infrastructure and technology.

CNY Feeds, a company that supplies feed to about 120,000 dairy cattle in New York each day, is also expanding. General manager Shelwyn Becker told Spectrum News CNY that the company will open a new facility in Avon to better serve Western New York farms and reduce delivery costs. “There’s a large pocket of dairy in Western New York that, for where we’re at right now, the freight makes it so hard for us to be competitive there, but with the new facility over there, it’ll give us more flexibility with where we make deliveries from and we’ll be able to reduce the distance traveled. For the farm side, what that should do is bring prices down for everyone,” Becker said.

Becker added that keeping feed prices low is a priority, especially as input costs for farmers remain high. The company aims to be a reliable partner for local farms, ensuring that emergency needs are met and operations can continue smoothly.

What this means for Syracuse and Central New York

The growth in dairy processing and farm modernization has ripple effects for Syracuse and surrounding towns like DeWitt, Salina, and Geddes. With more investment in infrastructure and technology, local farms can remain competitive and sustainable, supporting jobs and economic activity across Central New York.

For residents, the expansion means more opportunities for employment in agriculture, logistics, and manufacturing. It also means that local products are more likely to be processed and sold within Central New York, keeping dollars circulating in the community. The presence of events like the American Dairy XPO in Syracuse highlights the city’s role as a center for agricultural innovation and business networking.
