Syracuse University tightens building access as Orange sports teams notch key wins
Central New York wakes up to new Syracuse University building access rules and big Orange sports wins. Here’s what’s happening across CNY today.
New SUID access rules coming to all Syracuse University academic buildings
Syracuse University will require all students, faculty, and staff to carry their SU ID card to access academic buildings starting November 16, according to the Daily Orange. This change, announced Tuesday by Newhouse Dean Mark Lodato, is designed to enhance campus safety while keeping buildings open during university hours.

The new policy follows a successful test run last year in five campus buildings, including Huntington Hall, Dineen Hall, the Comstock Art Facility, the Marley Education Center, and Newhouse. The Department of Public Safety partnered with university officials to shape the new access approach after repeated incidents, such as a trespasser being removed from Newhouse 3 last year.

For Newhouse, general entrance access will remain open Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After 5:30 p.m. and on weekends, only those with SU IDs will be able to enter until midnight on weekdays and 10 p.m. on weekends. All visitors must also carry a card during these hours. Questions about door locations or card access can be directed to Chelsea Huitink, DPS Chief Michael Bunker, or Commander Jeremy Welling, according to the Daily Orange.
These changes matter for anyone commuting to or working on campus, especially as the fall semester heads into its busiest stretch. For more on education updates, visit our Syracuse schools page.
Orange football finds late-game magic, eyes bowl eligibility
Syracuse football is back on a winning streak for the first time since September 2025, according to the Daily Orange. The Orange, now 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the ACC, have four games left in the 2026 season. Two of those are against sub-.500 conference opponents, NC State and Boston College, giving Syracuse a clear path to bowl eligibility if they can secure two more wins.
The team’s midseason turnaround has been marked by a quarterback shuffle. Amari Odom threw six touchdowns against UConn on October 3 before a shoulder injury ended his season. Malachi Nelson stepped in, throwing for over 500 yards and three touchdowns across two games, but was sidelined by an ankle injury. Steve Angeli has since taken over, throwing for 456 yards and four touchdowns in his last two starts, with no interceptions after five in his previous two ACC games, per the Daily Orange.

Late-game drives have made the difference. Against North Carolina, Syracuse tied the game with a 75-yard drive and won in overtime. Against SMU, the Orange scored a game-winning touchdown after a 68-yard drive, upsetting No. 19 SMU 30-27. Receiver Calvin Russell III has emerged as a key target, with a career-high eight receptions and 86 yards against UNC, and the game-winning touchdown and two-point conversion in overtime.
With bowl eligibility in reach, the Orange are looking to keep the momentum going. For more on the latest in Syracuse sports, check our dedicated page.
Syracuse women’s basketball forces 29 turnovers in season-opening rout
The Syracuse women’s basketball team opened its season with a dominant 75-48 win over Sacred Heart at the JMA Wireless Dome, forcing 29 turnovers, more than in any game last year, according to the Daily Orange. The Orange recorded 23 steals, led by freshman Célaine Ricco’s seven, the most by a Syracuse player since 2021-22.
Ricco, a newcomer from France, made an immediate impact off the bench, recording five steals on six possessions in the first quarter. Emely Rodriguez, making her first SU start, added four steals and 13 points, including three three-pointers. Last season, Syracuse averaged 20.4 points off turnovers, but on Tuesday, the Orange scored 33 points off Sacred Heart’s mistakes.

Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack praised Ricco’s defensive energy, which helped set the tone for the team. The Orange will look to build on this defensive identity as the season continues. For more on SU athletics, visit our Orange sports page.
Everson Museum’s ‘America 250’ exhibit explores U.S. history through art
The Everson Museum of Art in downtown Syracuse has opened its new exhibition, “America 250: Rebels, Radicals, and Revolutionaries,” featuring around 75 artworks from the museum’s permanent collection. The show, which runs through March 28, 2027, explores the nation’s history through paintings, ceramics, photographs, and installation art, according to the Daily Orange.
Curated by Steffi Chappell and Garth Johnson, the exhibition groups works by theme rather than chronology, placing pieces from different decades side by side. Highlights include Ruth Rippon’s 1977 ceramic “The U.S. Presidents” and Larry Rivers’ 1975 screen print “An Outline of History.” The show also features extended labels for nearly every piece, offering deeper context about the artists and the times in which they worked.
Visitors can see Elliott Erwitt’s 1969 photograph “Church at Wounded Knee,” which depicts the site of the 1890 massacre, among other works that challenge and reinterpret iconic American imagery. The multimedia approach has been popular with visitors, according to museum staff. For those interested in CNY arts and culture, the Everson’s exhibit offers a timely look at the stories behind the nation’s founding and evolution.
