Syracuse airport passengers fell 5.9 percent in August 2026 while cargo rose 9.6 percent

Syracuse Hancock International Airport handled 269,204 passengers in August 2026, down 16,988 or 5.9 percent from August 2025, according to the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority’s activity report for the two months ending August 31, 2026. Cargo went the other way: 3,580 tons in August 2026, up 9.6 percent. July 2026 was down only 0.6 percent, so August is where the drop happened.

Passengers are the airport’s business, and the authority’s most recent news release, a May 26, 2026 announcement of a Moody’s credit upgrade, listed “Sustained passenger growth, with enplanements surpassing pre-pandemic levels” among the factors the rating agency cited. Two months into the fiscal year that began July 1, 2026, the passenger count is 3.3 percent behind last year’s pace. The report gives no reason, and the authority has published nothing about it.

What the August 2026 report shows

For July 1 through August 31, 2026, the airport counted 542,482 passengers against 561,247 a year earlier, down 18,765 or 3.3 percent. Cargo for the two months was 7,315 tons, up 11.7 percent. CNY Signal subtracted the August figures from the two-month totals to isolate July: 273,278 passengers in July 2026 against 275,055 in July 2025, down 1,777. The authority’s separate July report shows the same numbers.

For scale, the August 2025 report carried the August 2024 figure, 266,271 passengers. August 2026 was 2,933 above that month and 16,988 below August 2025. The two-month total, though, is below both years: 561,478 in 2024, 561,247 in 2025 and 542,482 in 2026.

Which airlines carried fewer passengers?

The authority also publishes each month’s passengers by airline. CNY Signal compared the August 2025 and August 2026 carrier tables. The eight changes add up to the 16,988 decline exactly.

Frontier is the largest single piece, 42 percent of the decline. The remaining 9,830 is the net of declines at six other airlines and a gain at Delta. The authority had announced on February 2, 2026 that Delta would add a fourth daily Atlanta flight from June 7, 2026 and put a larger aircraft on its Minneapolis route.

The Frontier row needs care. The authority’s carrier reports show Frontier passengers of 4,654 in February 2026, 4,579 in March and 3,529 in April, then none in May, June, July or August 2026. Frontier carried 45,548 passengers through Syracuse in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2026. As of September 13, 2026, the airport’s website still lists Frontier Airlines on its airlines page, in Terminal B, and as a carrier to Orlando International Airport on its destinations page. The authority has issued no release about Frontier’s Syracuse schedule. CNY Signal did not confirm Frontier’s current Syracuse schedule with the airline, so this story reports only what the authority’s tables show.

Did flights fall as much as passengers?

No. Airline takeoffs and landings, which the report calls air carrier operations, fell 1.5 percent in August, from 3,775 to 3,719, while passengers fell 5.9 percent. The report counts operations and passengers, not seats or how full the aircraft were, so it cannot say whether the gap comes from smaller planes, emptier planes, or both.

The steep operations declines were elsewhere. General aviation, meaning private and charter flying, fell 27.0 percent to 1,797 operations. Military operations fell 51.2 percent to 366. Neither category carries airline passengers: the passenger total in the main report equals the total of the airlines in the carrier report. Military flying is also a small, lumpy number. August military operations were 415 in 2024, 750 in 2025 and 366 in 2026, and they have been below the prior year in every month from February through August 2026. A 51 percent swing on a base of a few hundred flights is not the same kind of number as a 5.9 percent change in 286,000 passengers.

Cargo rose at both freight carriers. FedEx moved 1,449 tons in August 2026, up 34 from August 2025, and UPS moved 2,131 tons, up 279. Cargo has been above the prior year in every month from February through August 2026, and the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2026 finished at 40,313 tons, up 7.6 percent.

What could explain the August drop?

The report does not say, and the authority has not published an explanation. Three explanations usually get offered for a month like this. Here is what each would require, and what the record shows so far.

Less airline capacity. This would require airlines to have scheduled fewer seats to Syracuse than a year earlier. The record shows Frontier at zero and airline operations down 1.5 percent, but the report has no seat counts, so it can neither confirm nor rule this out.

Construction on the airport’s roads and parking. This would require travelers to have chosen other airports, or not flown, because of the changes. The authority announced roadway, parking and wayfinding changes effective February 20, 2026, and the start of Consolidated Rental Car Facility construction on March 16, 2026, closing the Arrivals B pickup loop and the overflow parking lot for approximately 14 months. The record cuts against this as a full explanation: the same conditions were in place for the second half of March and all of April and May, when passengers were up on the prior year, before the declines in June, July and August. The authority has not linked construction to traffic, and neither does this story.

Softer demand for air travel generally. This would require airports of similar size to show similar August declines. The authority’s report covers only Syracuse, and CNY Signal did not pull other airports’ August figures for this story.

What the authority has said about traffic in 2026

– February 6, 2026: at its State of the Airport event, the authority released its 2025 Annual Report and said Executive Director Jason Terreri “highlighted a year of strong performance in 2025.”
– May 26, 2026: announcing the Moody’s upgrade to A3 from Baa1, the authority listed “Sustained passenger growth, with enplanements surpassing pre-pandemic levels” among the factors Moody’s cited. The same release said proceeds of a $47.4 million bond issue would fund the rental car facility.
– The authority’s landside redevelopment page, which is undated, says passenger traffic “reached record-breaking levels of 3 Million+ in 2024.”
– The fiscal year that ended June 30, 2026 finished at 2,865,562 passengers, 4,664 fewer than the 2,870,226 of the prior fiscal year, a 0.2 percent decline, according to the June 2026 report.

Nothing has been posted on the authority’s news page since May 26, 2026. The monthly reports keep coming, and the September figures will show whether August was a one-month dip. Two months is not a trend, and this story does not treat it as one.
